Coaching

Mondays 6.15 - 7.30pm

Fiskerton Cricket Club is enjoying a resurgence, reports Russell Jones Junior Cricket Co-ordinator.

'When my son reached 6 years old, I noticed that football clubs were presenting chances for kids to play, but cricket clubs seemed to want children a little older. I thought it was wrong, and that cricket should become part of young childrens balls skill development.'

For the last 5 years we have successfully run balls skills courses centred around the game of cricket for Year 2 and up. This has allowed children to develop their co-ordination skills along side their fitness and bring out the sport person in all.

'The great thing is that starting at this age more girls want to be involved and once started there is more chance of keeping them within a sporting environment whether that be cricket, tennis, football, hockey, rugby etc. Unless we get our kids involved in sport from an early age, our sporting teams will remain second best, you only have to see participation levels for kids in Australia and New Zealand to see that, whatever sport they are playing.'

Fiskerton CC is determined to keep youth in sport, and welcomes all participants, whether starting a fresh or rejoining after a spell away.

'We run at least one Kwik Cricket team in the Regional Leagues and who knows if our numbers continue to increase we can get 2 teams or may be more. We have also been fortunate enough in the past to run Under 11 & Under 13 hard ball teams as well. This year we will run an Under 11's hard ball side in the Newark League.'

We have an integration policy for our 'older' juniors who are encouraged into the senor squads with appropriate supervision and support. This year we are pleased to have an under 12 wicketkeeper supporting on second XI and more than keeping up with them.

Our Club runs formal coaching nights, for both Kwik cricket (soft ball) and hard ball juniors, on Mondays throughout the year from the end of April starting at 6.15pm at our ground on Cooks Lane in Morton, and hopefully running through to the School Summer Holidays for those that want this. Coaching continues through the Holidays on a less formal basis.
